When my daughter was born, apart from all the excitement around that occasion itself, I was also very eager and was looking forward to dress up this beautiful girl in pretty clothes. I still am the most happy about shopping for my little girl and till date this reflects in my shopping bill;). As I myself love to try different couture, same applies for my daughter. It’s such a treat watching them wear various styles be it a skirt-top, tunics, party wear, shorts-tees or even swim wear. These tiny tots simply look so adorable. I always pick up unique stuff which stands out from the crowd and prefer to buy try every style for her closet. You can say I have an obsession with kids clothing!

But how often do we see vibrant colors and Indian themes as an inspiration behind kids clothing range? Very few global brands use different hues in their clothing inspired by water, earth, air, flowers, history, spices and are full of life. You can describe these styles in one Indian word as different aspects of ‘Rangoli design’ and in English terms reflection of ‘Rainbow’. One such brand I got introduced to is @MasalaBaby a New York based kids clothing brand, which blends aesthetic and urban styles in their clothes which are magnificently printed and embroidered by various artisans originating in India. From toddlers to grown-ups or even twinning outfit for mom-daughter, they have it all. It’s unique, striking and yet universal with earthy, spices & electric colors like green, blue, yellow, orange(saffron), brown, white & pink.

It’s not only an incredible kid’s designer wear but socially conscious company that values supply chain and partnerships. They have assigned women-led manufacturing units and artisan groups in Indian villages thus opening up work opportunities for these underprivileged women. They work more like “connectors” connecting the dots and telling stories from east to west & back through their cultural fit designs.

We UNIMO moms coming from various backgrounds were privileged to be a part of their brand launch in India at @Bandra @IndigoDelli and got an opportunity to meet the owner & founder of Masala Baby, Dipali Patwa who herself has a long association with designing, consulting, creating & researching product ideas with organizations like SEWA((Self-Employed Women’s Association) in 1996, Fab India, in 1998 -as one of their first Creative Directors and helped set up stores across Rome, Italy, Dubai and UAE and Chief Creative Officer for Mela Artisans, who’s vision is to create a dynamic global marketplace for artisans and hand crafted product. Then popped up the conception of @MasalaBaby, with a funding of $10,000 and a mission to work with fair-trade manufacturers, source real organic cotton and build a team that was able to balance work & life.

We had an exciting discussion over the brand, their vision & mission. As all of us were mothers of daughters, each one of us had an amazing parenting journey to share. I also realized in the course of our talks that we all not only aspire beautiful clothing for our babies but also prefer a brand that just feels great and is comfortable to wear for our kids throughout the day.

We all are now eagerly waiting to experience their best designs as they are ready to launch exclusive kids wear for girls in Mumbai. Along with other mums, I was fortunate to experience one of their products for my daughter. It’s very cozy & comfortable with softly knitted fabric for active kids and can be worn outdoors as well as used for their sleeping time. And I simply loved the designing & fabric which is purely 100% organic cotton. My daughter was not ready to get it off her:). She simply loved it.

I wish they had similar pair for me too 🙂
